Foundation Degree in Working with Young People

Who is it for?

Our Foundation Degree is for those working or who intend to work with young people in a range of contexts. You can study full or part time so you can fit your studies around your work commitments and lifestyle.

The course can be studied full time for 2 years (2 days per week) or part-time for 3 years (1 day per week) plus individual study and work placements. Work based learning is a major element so work placement is a significant component of the course.

Foundation Degree Modules

Year 1

1) Skills and practices in learning

2) The development of guidance theory and practice

3) The emergence of multi-agency, multi-disciplinary working

4) Legal and ethical considerations

5) Applying knowledge, skills and understanding to practice within the children’s workforce (1)

6) The development of children and young people

 

Year 2

7) Guidance work: the integrative approach

8) Young people’s personal and psychological development

9) Facilitating group work

10) Working for change with children and young people; engaging multi-agency support

11) Applying knowledge, skills and understanding to practice within the children’s workforce (2)

12) Evaluation

Qualifications

A Foundation Degree in Working with Young People which can lead to employment for example as a Learning Mentor, Trainee Connexions Personal Adviser or Education Welfare Officer. The programme can also lead to a variety of Honours degree courses as follows:

A one year BA Hons ‘top up’ in Working with Young People (hyper link to BA page)
Entry into year 2 (via a bridging course) to BA Hons in Youth & Community
Entry into year 2 (via a bridging course) to BA Hons in Social Work

Assessment

Assessment is by course work, there are no exams.

Entry requirements

Either:
A minimum of DD at A level or 120 level 3 UCAS tariff points gained from acceptable equivalent qualifications such as: a combination of one A level grade D plus 2 A/S levels at D or above; a BTEC National; a GNVQ Advanced; an Access Course; or a 14-19 Progression Diploma.
Or
An NVQ 3 – as this is not graded we require NVQ 3 holders to also take a pre-entry test
Or
Significant work experience in a recognised relevant setting

Plus a full criminal records bureau clearance, two satisfactory references and an interview at CETAD, Lancaster University. On application students must demonstrate a genuine interest in working with young people and preferably have some experience of working with the 0-19 age group.
